A sunny painting for a rainy day.

Almost finished with this one, I think …

Lots of stormy weather today, so a lazy afternoon for the dogs.

Wait a minute.

Come to think of it, pretty much every afternoon is a lazy afternoon for the dogs.

Long-legged Blue, dreaming away in a chair a couple of sizes too small.

Buster spends at least four minutes arranging the quilt just so,
before he plops down for a snooze.

And here’s Roadie. I don’t see how this can possibly be comfortable.

Sweet dreams and happy painting!

In celebration of the first day of summer ...

a work-in-progress inspired by that bright summer light peeking through the trees.

Whew! It’s been quite a busy week. Here’s one of three landscapes I have in progress right now. I sure do love me a country road!

Annie! (but not the musical)

Everything comes to those who wait …
except a cat.

Coming soon to a painting near you ...

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

PSALM 19:1

Sunday evening following a stormy afternoon, I was just blown away by the beauty of the clouds as I drove home from town. I pulled into our driveway, ran into the house, kissed Paul hello as I was quickly pulling on my “walking in the pasture” boots, took two seconds to spritz on some mosquito-repelling Off (which was supposed to be “Unscented” but still had the faintest hint of the unmistakable smell of Off classic, embedded into my memory from childhood camping trips), and hurried out to the pasture to take some photos in the quickly changing light. I had about ten minutes of a spectacular light and color show in every direction before the light faded to gray and I headed back in, elated that I had made it home just in time to capture this display.

Hallelujah!

You might be an artist if ...

There are a lot of  “You might be an artist if …” jokes floating around.
This is one of my favorites:

You might be an artist if
you can totally tell the difference between
beige, tan, cream, taupe, khaki, ecru, sand and eggshell.

A new one for the Revel

Cats’ hearing apparatus is built to allow the human voice
to easily go in one ear and out the other.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS • 6 x 6 inches • oil on GessobordTM

I started this one of our Annie this afternoon. When she’s done I think I’m going to save her for the Revel in October, but I will have prints available before then.

So far I’ve been really diligent about stopping to take progress photos as I go, so I’ll be able to share those when she’s done.

Sweet dreams!

Alla prima wind-down

A Walk in the Park  © 2014 Karen Mathison Schmidt

private collection • Elk Grove, California

Instead of warming up with this one today, I painted it at the end of my work day, as a wind-down. It was almost as refreshing as an actual walk in the park. Almost.

These little landscapes I’ve been doing are small versions of larger paintings I’m working on or planning to have available for the Revel. The larger version of this one is still in the sketch stage, but I loved playing with the color scheme here in the smaller painting. I’ll be showing the larger paintings, too, as I finish them.

Here are some work-in-progress photos:
